Is Popcorn Cereal?

During my four years of college, I had many roommates. I had decided that each year I would live with people I didn’t know. I’m a very introverted person, so I figured this would be a good way for me to meet new people and make some friends. I went to a school out-of-state and I didn’t know anyone going to the same school as me anyways. This decision led me to meet a lot of different people and have some amazing experiences. I did have some awful roommates, but I’ll share those stories in another post.

Right now, I want to share about a roommate I had my sophomore year. To respect people’s privacy I won’t share any real names, so let’s call this roommate Leanna. Leanna was one of the nicest roommates I had in college, but she was a little weird. She grew up in a small town in Northern Utah and was homeschooled before going to college.

One day I had just gotten home, so I walked past the kitchen to go to my room when I saw Leanna pour milk into her popcorn. Immediately, I stopped and stared at her very confused. Leanna then picked up a spoon and ate her popcorn like it was cereal. I then asked her what she was doing because I didn’t want to believe what I had just seen and she said, “eating popcorn” like it was no big deal. I responded saying, “with milk?!?” She said “yes,” which then I told her we could no longer be friends. She then just started laughing about it, but didn’t know why what she was doing was weird. I then learned that her whole family ate popcorn this way. Leanna was raised to eat popcorn like it was cereal. I had seen her do this many more times throughout the time we lived together.

This was something that was normal to her, but seemed very weird to me. Now, I assume that this would be weird to a lot of people which is why I wanted to share this story. Leanna was one of the roommates that reminded me how people grow up differently and we shouldn’t judge people because of our differences. Everyone grows up being taught different things, which helps make each of us our own unique person. I only lived with Leanna for one semester, but she was very kind to me and that was something I really needed at that time of my life. Yes, she did things that I thought were weird, but that didn’t change the fact that she was a good person.

What I hope you take from this story, is to not judge people for doing things differently from you. As long as what they are doing is not hurting anyone or themselves then it shouldn’t matter. Seeing Leanna eat popcorn like it was cereal became a joke between us and a good story I could tell other people about. Thinking back on it now I have so many questions I wished I would have asked her. Like, what did her family do when they went to the movies? Did they sneak in the milk? I haven’t tried eating my popcorn this way, and I don’t think I ever will. So my question for you is, will you try eating your popcorn like it’s cereal?
